Harland Lab Tropicalis Team

The Boss:

Richard M. Harland (harland@socrates.berkeley.edu)

The Team:

Postdocs:

Mustafa K. Khokha - screening for mutants with organogenesis defects - kidney, liver, heart.

Timothy C. Grammer - screening for mutants with neural induction and patterning defects

Technician ("Frog Fancier" and "Frog Whisperer"):

Maura Lane - maintains the health of our tropicalis colony. She has developed a database to keep track of our animals which is both thorough and versatile. She is also in the process of selecting for animals that mature rapidly, are robust, and produce high quality haploids. Finally, she is investigating husbandry conditions that maximize the maturation rate of these frogs.

Cate Oldenburg - is developing transgenesis methods in X. tropicalis.

Veterinarian:

John Parker - has identified chytrid infections and mycobacterial infections in our frogs. He continues a scientific program to understand the diseases that affect these amphibians.

Graduate Students:

Daniel Roche - analysis of the transcriptional regulation of the globin locus. Developing transposon based insertional mutagenesis.

Undergraduates: The undergraduate team working on the tropicalis project is the real force generating results. They are a fantastic group who have been recognized by various research funding agencies including the Undergraduate Reseach Apprentice Program at UC-Berkeley, the Goldwater Scholarship, the Biology Fellows Program (HHMI), and the Berkeley Beckman Scholars Program.
